Justice Elio Smith was born on August 9, 1995 in Los Angeles, California. He attended the Orange County School of the Arts, graduating in 2013 with a major in acting. During his senior year at Orange County, he was ranked in the top one percent of young artists in the United States by the National Young Arts Foundation, where he received a nomination for the U.S. Presidential Scholar of the Arts.

He started his career with a minor role in the crime film Trigger Finger (2012). He made his first TV appearance in the comedy series Miss Guidance (2014). He starred in Paper Towns (2015), which was his first mainstream film.  Justice got his first starring role as Ezekiel ‘Books’ Figuero in Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama series The Get Down (2016-2017). He made his stage debut in the Off-Broadway production Yen (2017).

He appeared in the blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howards. He got his first leading role in the adventure comedy film Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019). He co-starred in the HBO Max LGBT Drama Generation (2021) for which he received several nominations.
